"The compound. I was aware of an issue with the equation, an unknown variable upsetting the balance. Time was running short, and I pushed the team to accelerate the process."

"It was you...?"

Her head throbbed as memories rushed back to that blurry dream she had within the ice dungeon. A girl in agony on a stone slab, injected with an unfamiliar serum.

She didn't know how to react.

"Yes, it was my fatal blunder," the hand gripping the pipe dropped to his side. "I couldn't... I didn't want to oversee the operations because I knew it would fail."

The pipe slipped from his grasp.

"But when I returned, you were the only thing left," he confessed. "And if you were still alive, it meant the experiment had succeeded."

With a long sigh, he sank back into his chair, his hands clenched tightly.

"I don't understand how you escaped the lab, but I found your unconscious body outside. I remember that day... It was bitterly cold."

She remained silent.

He met her gaze, "No ordinary human should have survived. Yet somehow... you did."

The embers of the fallen pipe's flame dimmed. Rin's anger dissipated completely. She stared at the ground, watching the ice on the floor slowly melt.

"What happened next?" she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.

"I brought your body back into the lab and checked your vital signs. To my astonishment, your body was containing the impurity," he explained. "But I knew it would eventually take control, corrupting your mana, turning you into a mindless automaton. Your body would be a prison for your mind until death."

Rin couldn't fathom why, but the man's words only left her more bewildered. How had she remained oblivious, and why hadn't he informed her about this? Moreover, if there was an impurity, why hadn't he removed it sooner?

It simply didn't add up.

"Why didn't you just remove the impurity? Why wait so long to take it away from me?"

The man's expression hardened.
